Peel Creates Fall Beauty from Leftovers
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure holds
true for designer Megan Berks and her label Peel. For Fall 2006 she
dug through garage sale bins, the backs of closets, and the bottom of
sewing baskets to create a collection that brings craft together with
fashion.
“The collection is a cohesive mish mash of simply pretty clothes
with unexpected and whimsical details resulting in a handmade quality.
Each item in this collection was designed with the idea of borrowing
from vintage styles and childlike details while maintaining a flattering
and modern cut,” says Megan.
So a cozy sweater is decorated with a whimsical array of brightly
coloured buttons, a stretchy textured lace dress comes in an antique
shade of moss green with ribbon trim, and a fleece lined bomber jacket
gets the vintage treatment in an over-dyed brocade. Add a lacy trench
coat and pretty holiday tops in silky satins with hand-dyed yarn appliqués
and you’ve got a collection that is rich in whimsy and reflects
a passion for the handmade aesthetic.
“I love the personal experience of channeling inspiration around
me into something new for other people to enjoy,” says Megan.
“And I love the challenge of putting the mish mash of pieces together
and seeing the result, you never know what to expect.”
Peel ranges in price from $86-$198 and is available in Vancouver
at Dream, Fine Finds, Life of Riley, Raya, and House of Jewels, in Prince
George at Riot, in Victoria at Tulipe Noire and Dilemma, in Edmonton
